Azomureș is the main producer of agricultural fertilizers in Romania, part of the Swiss group Ameropa since 2012.

The industrial platform is located in Târgu Mureș and covers an area of 100 hectares. It includes a complex of facilities for the production of agricultural fertilizers - NPK, ammonium nitrate, CAN, granular urea - and variousindustrial products - melamine, technical urea, ammonia water, nitric acid and others.

The annual production capacity is 1.8 million tons of fertilizers, 75% of the production being delivered to the local market, to distributors in Romania. The regional market – Serbia, Hungary, Bulgaria, Ukraine – represents some of the options for export, as well as countries on other continents.

  • 1962 - Construction of Combinatului de îngrășăminte azotoase Tg. Mureș begins
  • 1966-1968 - Commissioning of the first ammonia, nitric acid and ammonium nitrate plants
  • 1974-1978 - Modernization of existing facilities and construction of NPK and urea facilities
  • 1980-1981 - Construction of the melamine plant
  • 1990 - The chemical plant becomes a joint-stock company
  • 1997 - Privatization of Azomureș SA – majority shareholder Transworld Fertilizers Holding Luxembourg
  • 2012 - Ameropa Holding acquires the majority stake in Azomureș
  • 2012-2016 - Modernization of ammonia plants, conversion of the urea plant for the production of granular urea, installation of equipment to reduce emissions of ammonium nitrate, NPK and urea, in accordance with European regulations

The Swiss grup Ameropa was founded in 1948 and specializes in trading grains and fertilizers. Currently, the company is present in 31 countries and annually trades 16 million tons of grain and 16 million tons of fertilizers, of which 8 million tons of urea.

In Romania, the Ameropa group is present through Azomureș, the port operator Chimpex in Constanța and the distributors Ameropa Grains (Constanța), Promat (Satu Mare) and Agroind (Bihor).
